Dr. Kildare's Strange Case

Published 1940

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032416/
Young Dr. Kildare (Lew Ayres) is still being trained at General Hospital by old, crusty Dr. Gillespie (Lionel Barrymore). This time, he tries to rehabilitate Gregory Lane, a brain surgeon depressed over losing too many patients (and incidentally Kildare's romantic rival for nurse Mary Lamont). Lane's losing streak takes a new turn when one of his patients survives...but seems to be insane. Or is the man's strange obsession with Friday the clue to a mystery? To find out, Kildare must take a terrible risk.

Subject: Gotta Love Kildare!
I have loved these movies ever since I was a kid waay back in the 1950s!

Just as I loved the Richard Chamberlain incarnation on TV in a later decade.

Yeah, they're a bit "Doctors are so wonderful and self-sacrificing" but there really ARE Doctors like that.

Subject: Cruelty or altruism? You decide.
The practice of medicine by Dr. Kildare sometimes sounds almost like voodoo. But, insulin therapy was indeed used in the 1940's as a cure for schizophrenic patients. It was horrific for the patients who had to endure the treatment. One man who had 50 of these treatements, Leonard Roy Frank, went on to co-found a group that worked against abuse of psychiatric patients in the 1970's.
The altruistic Dr. Kildare would never harm a patient just to help fellow doctor out of a jam... or would he?????
Around 56:00 in the movie, Dr. Kildare's father serves up a platter full of horse poop that is supposed to be a description and explanation of this cure.
But, then most of the medical movies made back then sound strange when we see then today.
All in all, this is a pretty fair entry in the Dr. Kildare franchise.

An average entry in the Kildate series enhanced by a strong supporting cast and by the production values to be expected of MGM.
Good wholesome entertainment that was just right for 40's moviegoers

Subject: Short Film?
No, it's not a "short film" as rq52 states. Not sure where that came from. it's nearly an hour and a half long.

Having said that, the film is wonderful. Haven't seen it in years. Thanks for the upload. Can't go wrong with Lionel Barrymore.
